    . This paper investigates the possible use of Jini technology for building Java-based metacomputing environments. The paper presents the structure of a prototype Jini metacomputing system. The overall working mechanism and some details of the implementation are described. It is shown that Jini is a suitable technology that deserves the interest of the metacomputing research community.

    In this paper we propose a computational grid platform called JaWS++ that seeks to harvest the power of idle pools of workstations connected through the Internet and integrate them in a grid computing platform for the execution of embarrassingly parallel computations. The computations are developed in the portable Java programming language and an API is provided for application development. JaWS++ is a compromise between scavenging and reservation-based computational grids. Its service layer is composed by pools of workstations that are autonomously administered by different organizations. Each pool participates in JaWS++ under a well defined timetable to reduce unforeseen availability problems, increase dependability and favor batch work allocation and offline execution. © Springer-Verlag 2004

    The trusted execution module: commodity general-purpose trusted computing

    This paper introduces the trusted execution module (TEM); a high-level specification for a commodity chip that can execute user-supplied procedures in a trusted environment. The TEM is capable of securely executing partially-encrypted procedures/closures expressing arbitrary computation. These closures can be generated by any (potentially untrusted) party who knows the TEM's public encryption key. Compared to a conventional smartcard, which is typically used by pre-programming a limited set of domain- or application- specific commands onto the smartcard, and compared to the trusted platform module (TPM), which is limited to a fixed set of cryptographic functions that cannot be combined to provide general-purpose trusted computing, the TEM is significantly more flexible. Yet we present a working implementation using existing inexpensive Javacard smartcards that does not require any export-restricted technology. The TEM's design enables a new style of programming, which in turn enables new applications. We show that the TEM's guarantees of secure execution enable exciting applications that include, but are not limited to, mobile agents, peer-to- peer multiplayer online games, and anonymous offline payments.Anglai

    The specific effects of radiosurgery on brain tumor tissue are not well understood. We review several approaches that have been used to address this issue. Correlating the radiobiology of radiosurgery with the radioclinical outcome may help to understand these tissue changes. In vivo imaging investigations are usually performed with MRI, but the use of functional and metabolic imaging, such MR spectroscopy, positron emission tomography or single-photon emission computed tomography may provide additional information on the effects of radiosurgery. Finally, histological observations represent an invaluable source of information, when systematically analyzed in their clinical context
